Senior Educator, Jeremy Maissel, is a member of Kibbutz Alumim, a community in the western Negev, on the Gaza border. For the past eight years, Palestinian terrorists have been shooting Kassam missiles at the neighboring town Sderot and locality. After the Disengagement of Summer 2005, when Israel withdrew from the entire Gaza strip, and since Hamas came to power in summer 2007, violent escalations have turned thousands of Israeli residents into targets of sometimes daily Kassam and mortar bombardments.

Sderot and the Gaza border area regularly appear in the international headlines – this is an opportunity for you and your community or group to hear first-hand from a resident.

Gaza Gameplan is an interactive program taking a deeper look at the Gaza border region. We will examine the background and context of the current situation and explore alternative strategies for the future.

Jeremy Maissel has presented programs about the Sderot & Gaza border area in the UK and North America. This updated presentation comes from Israel straight to you, unmediated by TV channels and the international media, and includes his personal experiences and impressions living in the shadow of the missiles. You will have a chance to ask questions and express your opinions as to how Israel should act in the present situation.

Educational Goals:

Gaza Gameplan's primary goal is to provide people who care about Israel with in-depth knowledge about the current situation in the Sderot / Gaza border area.

This is achieved through exploring a wide range of aspects of the present state of affairs through interactive, participatory discussions.

Participants are encouraged to relate personally to moral dilemmas facing residents of the area.

We explore the way that events are depicted in the media and how they are perceived by residents.

We discuss the responsibility for the welfare of people in the town of Sderot and the other border communities.

We consider different defense and military strategies, and the relevant factors in deciding policy.

Participants have the opportunity to ask their own questions and express their personal opinions.

The program also provides participants with suggestions for how they might help local residents and keep up-to-date with events.

Participants will leave the program with a far richer understanding of the conflict on Israel's border with Gaza, enabling them (if they so wish) to become more active on this issue.

This program takes its place in achieving Israel Seminars' principal goal of enhancing Israel engagement in world Jewish communities, as a primary, defining element of our Jewish identity.
