You don't have to be Irish to enjoy this colorful true story of Jews on the Emerald Isle.
The history of the Jewish community in Ireland is uniquely calm and peaceful, with one exception, known as the Limerick pogrom of 1904.
The events were well publicized at the time, prompting questions in the British parliament, and articles and editorials in the London daily newspapers. This program, based on extensive research into family narratives, contemporary newspaper accounts, police records, census forms, interviews, academic articles and books, tells the whole story and reveals a fascinating personal connection to these remarkable events. The program raises thoughts about Jewish peoplehood, important current issues facing world Jewry and Israel, and the prominent subject of refugees and migration today.
On our journey we will meet Winston Churchill, a character from one of the greatest works of 20th century literature – Ulysses by James Joyce, and a Jewish princess in a story by Frank McCourt. Presented by Jeremy Maissel of Israel Seminars. Join us for a fascinating Irish Jewish journey and experience a captivating story about a unique event.
This program is suitable for: Synagogue and community-wide audiences, JCC’s, Hillel and college student groups, 11-12th grade students at high schools or supplementary schools (religious schools etc.).
